A LEOPARD AND HIS SPOTS
By Kermit C. Moss
Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot coffee!
Conventional wisdom has it, and correctly so, that a leopard cannot
change his spots; but by
following closely we find that the editorial page editor of Arkansas’ only
statewide newspaper has suddenly changed his position! For many years back he
has been an ardent supply-sider, a follower of the notion that we should have a
government of the people, by the rich, for the rich, rather than a democratic
government of the people, by the people, for the people! A George W. Bush
supporter from the word go, he has been for a reduction of taxes for the rich,
as well as a lessening of regulatory control of banks and other financial
institutions. And every time the Nobel Prize winning economist
Paul Krugman warned us about the impending
downturn, he hooted about it, often pointing to a small upturn in the stock
market as proof that nothing was amiss!
But in today’s issue of the newspaper, he gave some long overdue notice of the importance of the demand, or consumer side of the economic picture! Read his article about The Vanishing Newspaper. There it is, just like any good, well-rounded, well-grounded economic writer would have put it: “Where the demand is, the supply will materialize”!
With this in mind, and considering the fact that consumer demand constitutes about 70% of our economy, perhaps the learned editor will tell us why he has consistently supported the wealthy supply-siders! Further, wealthy individuals and companies, seeking political control, have bought out so many news outlets across the country that now there is comparatively little competition, the soul of capitalism. There has been so much concentration that now almost all news comes from the same source.
Is there any wonder that people are turned off by these monopolistic newspapers, and look to the Internet?
Lay on, MacDuff!
