Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot
coffee! What is our great country to do
now? Our economic system is just not working! We now have over 40 million
living below the poverty level and not many jobs are to be found anywhere
in the great USA! Our capitalistic economy has some bothersome flaws,
in that it is subject to great booms and busts! And during the booms
everybody lives it up, but when the bust comes down on us, as it has now,
all hell breaks loose! Many can't make
their mortgage payments, or pay
their rent, buy food or clothing, pay their taxes, and certainly not buy
things just on impulse! Both Bob Herbert of the New York Times, as well
as writers for the International Monetary Fund have pointed out that the
great concentration of wealth at the top of the wealth and income scale,
along with fear of unemployment, have created a dearth, nearing zero, of
consumer demand funds!
How do we solve this dilemma? Quit paying unemployment insurance, and
convert it into employment insurance. Work out a federal-state plan
similar to what we have now, except that no one anymore would be paid for
doing nothing! Instead they would be put to work doing some of the many
things that need to be done for
our infrastructure and other things, too many to mention. This would not
be expected to eliminate private sector employment but to enhance it!
