JOBS, JOBS, JOBS!
Kermit C. Moss
Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot coffee! What would it take in our economy to produce full employment? Let us have another go at it! First, let us again look at the definition of economics, which reads, “one of the social sciences dealing with the production, delivery, and consumption of goods and services”! In the final analysis, if goods and services will not be consumed they will not be produced, and therein lies the rub! Jobs will either be lost or never offered!
Now, a critical look at capitalism reveals that, despite all its advantages, it seldom produces full employment, or anything close to it. What causes this? Fear of the economic future is the main culprit! Close examination reveals that the two main fears lurking out there are (1) the fear of bankruptcy caused by catastrophic illness, and (2) the fear of unemployment. So what are the possibilities facing us?
Hopefully the recently passed health care bill will take care of the first, and as to the ever-lurking fear of unemployment, I recommend that we quit paying people for doing nothing by discontinuing unemployment insurance, and instead give them jobs in restoring or maintaining our infrastructure! There is certainly enough out there that needs to be done, and business men would enjoy not having to pay unemployment taxes anymore. Also, think of the many jobs that would be created in the private sector because of the increased demand!
An improvement over now? YES!
