MORE ON CONSUMER CONFIDENCE

By Kermit C. Moss

Mercy me, sakes alive and carrot coffee!

What about consumer confidence and consumption?  So, before going further, again we need to look at the basic definition of economics:  “One of the social sciences dealing with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services”.  Broadly speaking, we are dealing with supply and demand, with some addendums.  And the importance of consumption is often slighted or ignored in related discussions.  But the conclusion here is that it is the clinch pin!

Why would any one produce or continue to produce a product or service that will not be utilized by consumers?  Effective demand consists not only of the desire to buy, but the consumer’s ability to buy, and finally, purchase and consumption of the good or service.  If lack of consumption eliminates jobs, then it must be consumption that creates them.

Consumer confidence is of vast importance, and fear of the future  its worst enemy.
The two worst and most damaging fears in our society are or have been unemployment and a financially ruinous illness.   Now, if the GOP, the party of no, no, no, will leave it  intact,  the illness problem has been or will later be solved by the new health care laws,  and my recent proposal providing for full employment would solve the other!

For what are we waiting, dear reader?  Let us debate it!

Lay on, MacDuff!
